#ID4RAH – Win 2 tickets to see Independence Day LIVE at the Royal Albert Hall

Screen Shot 2016-07-12 at 23.33.07
Enter the competition and win two tickets
Firstly, I drafted this blog post while watching Independence Day on E4 last night, so it felt a bit like the planets had aligned. Secondly the Royal Albert Hall have excelled themselves in the event-competition-stakes, by whoomphing a couple of tickets to see Independence Day LIVE up into space (sort of) and recapturing them safetly on their return. These tickets are up for grabs along with a lovely meal and pre-film drinks.

What’s Independence Day LIVE
It’s a screening of the 1996 film Independence Day [certificate 12] on a great big screen in the beautiful Royal Albert Hall but with the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra performing the film’s score (composed by David Arnold and orchestrated by Nicholas Dodd who’ll be conducting) live as the movie runs. The dialogue and sound effects will still be there and the film will also have subtitles, but the music’s created in front of you. David Arnold will be giving a pre-film talk as well.

Event details: Thursday 22 September 2016, spaceship dock (doors!) opens at 6.15pm, event starts at 7pm.

What’s the competition?
The chance to win two tickets for the film screening and talk, plus a meal and drinks. Your task is to estimate how high above sea-level (to the nearest whole METRE) the tickets were sent and tweet that number to them (@RoyalAlbertHall) using the hashtag #ID4RAH.

Click on the embedded tweet below to see the replies so far. You need to enter by 23:59 on 17 July 2016 to be in with a chance. A winner will be selected on 18 August 2016. See this link for the Royal Albert Hall’s full prize description, entry route and T&Cs. (note that it’s open only to residents of Great Britain and the Isle of Man, aged 18 years or over only).

Good luck! There’s a little video below of the tickets. I understand the RAH were trying to invite the film’s aliens to the screening but as the tickets weren’t collected they’ve made them available to the humans instead 🙂

You can buy tickets (£3) for any of the four screening events if you didn’t win in the Metro’s competition which closed earlier in the week (you’ll hear by 5pm today if you’ve won). Click on the small arrow next to the ‘available date’ shown to select one of the other events.

Enter to win tickets before 5pm Tuesday 6 October 2015 in this competition from the Metro newspaper. You can also buy tickets (£3) for each of the four screening events (see below) here. Winners will be notified by 5pm on Friday 9 October.

Screen Shot 2015-10-04 at 12.32.09To celebrate Charlie Higson‘s new series of Jekyll and Hyde, which will be shown on ITV this month, there’s an opportunity to win 10 pairs of tickets to one of four preview screening events. As part of the experience guests will step back in time to the 1930s and visit “Dr Jekyll’s laboratory and his alter ego Mr Hyde’s favourite saloon bar” – you’ll get to taste potions (mocktails) too before the screening and it will all take place in an “underground location in the heart of central London”.

The music for this series has been composed by David Arnold and Michael Price and orchestrated by Anthony Weeden, and recorded at AIR Studios (which is currently under threat, please sign the petition). This is the same team behind the excellent music for #Sherlock. (The music in the trailer below is library music though.)

The event-screenings will take place at these times on these dates

  • Friday 23 October – 6-8pm
  • Friday 23 October – 9-11pm
  • Saturday 24 October – 3-5.30pm

The promoter is Metro, usual Metro promotional rules apply – see metro.co.uk/T&C for full details.” – the T&C link given actually goes nowhere but I’ve found this which probably does the job: http://metro.co.uk/2012/12/04/usual-promotion-rules-3284595/

“Age: PG (Children are welcome to this event but we would recommend the screening would only be suitable for 10+. However if children younger than 10 would like to attend we’re happy for parents to use their discretion).”

Keen-eyed readers of this blog will note that Friday 23rd October is also the date on which David Arnold will be in Lucerne, Switzerland with the 21st Century Symphony Orchestra & Chorus (conducted by Ludwig Wicki), for ‘The music of David Arnold‘ – some discounted tickets are available too.

13 Oct: @OneMayfair hosts #LiveColourful perf of new track from @DavidGArnold, @LethalBizzle & @SineadHarnett

There’s to be a special one-off performance in London’s beautiful One Mayfair (see lovely pics below) on Tuesday 13 October 2015.

It will celebrate and showcase a track, created by David Arnold, Sinead Harnett and Lethal Bizzle, that blends grime and orchestral music. The event is supported by Bulmers Cider as part of their #LiveColourful LIVE campaign and you’ll be able to win tickets via their Facebook page or via their website. When the ticket link goes live I’ll add it here, meanwhile keep an eye on those pages. Later the track will be available as a free download too.

“The talented trio are collaborating on a unique new grime-orchestral sound which will fuse the distinctive sounds of grime, soulful electro pop and a full symphony orchestra.” News: Lethal Bizzle, David Arnold and Sinead Harnett to collaborate

There’s lots more about the collaboration, including quotes from everyone, in the Further Reading section below.

I think the picture above, of the grime-orchestral team, was taken in AIR Studios (another beautiful building, designed by Alfred Waterhouse who also designed the Natural History Museum) which is currently experiencing the threat of closure due to a neighbour’s planning application to over-oomph their basement. The application, if it goes ahead, would likely cause debilitating noise – never a great thing in a recording studio, but there’s also the possibility of water damage. If you’ve not already done so please sign and share the petition to SAVE AIR STUDIOS.

What else are the trio up to?
Lethal Bizzle is currently on tour with sold-out dates in Birmingham and Manchester this weekend but tickets are still available for London (7 Oct) and Bristol (8 Oct) [Brighton on 9 Oct is also sold out].

Sinead Harnett has just been nominated for a MOBO in the Best Newcomer category – congratulations and best wishes to her! She’s also performing at XOYO, London, on Wed 14 October [tickets].

David Arnold‘s work (with Michael Price) will soon be heard in ITV’s new Jekyll and Hyde series (written and produced by Charlie Higson), he’ll also be heading to Lucerne, Switzerland for a concert of his music performed by Ludwig Wicki and the 21st Century Symphony Orchestra & Chorus, on 23 October. You can download a flyer for ‘The Music of David Arnold‘. [Tickets] [Discounted tickets, while they last]

And isn’t One Mayfair lovely –

The Music of David Arnold – Jetzt im Radio Pilatus Club: VERGÜNSTIGTE TICKETS
aka The Music of David Arnold – now at Radio Pilatus Club: discounted tickets

The first thing on the website, in red at the top, says readers can “Login oder jetzt Registrieren und profitieren!” or “Login or Register now and take advantage!” but I don’t think registering at this stage is essential.

In the next bit there’s some information about some of the films David has scored (Stargate, Last of the Dogmen, Independence Day, Godzilla, Tomorrow Never Dies, Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace are mentioned), and then the page says “Erlebe diese atemberaubende Filmmusik und kauf dir jetzt dein Ticket für nur:” or “Experience this breathtaking film music and buy your ticket now for only:

  • Fr. 40.00 statt Fr. 80.00 (or “CHF 40.00 instead of CHF 80.00“)
  • Fr. 65.00 statt Fr. 125.00 (or “CHF 65.00 instead of CHF 125.00“)

Click on the yellow panel with Radio Pilatus Ticket Shop link on it which will take you to their Ticket Shop, then click on the picture with ‘The Music of David Arnold’ on it (it looks like the picture below) and you’ll be taken to a page to buy discounted tickets. The red button says “Tickets bestellen” which means “order tickets” and you can then go through the process of buying (hopefully discounted) tickets. Good luck.

I think there are several links all ultimately pointing to the same thing, listed below
