  • If you’re in Dublin this weekend don’t miss David Arnold’s concerts there
(19th and 20th May – a selection of his music on Friday night and Independence Day Live on Saturday)

The Royal Albert Hall has found a brilliant way of delighting film music fans with its amazing Films In Concert series. These involve a film playing on a massive screen as normal, but the score part of the film is silenced and instead performed live by an orchestra. It’s unbelievably visceral and immersive, and thrilling.

Last year David Arnold introduced his score for Independence Day LIVE at a fantastic film screening concert at the Royal Albert Hall and this year he’ll introduce Casino Royale, apparently the first of the James Bond films to be given the ‘live to picture’ treatment.

Where better than the RAH to have a World Premiere of a live-scored James Bond film? Exactly. They’ve previously hosted the premieres of Die Another Day, Skyfall and Spectre.

David also has a concert in Hamburg in March 2018, but it sold out before I had a chance to blog about it! But don’t miss his two Dublin concerts this weekend.

Panel event, London – @DavidGArnold at film music event in September

fansofmusicfromthemovies

David Arnold (composer of Stargate, five James Bond films, Independence Day, BBC’s Sherlock (with Michael Price), Made in Dagenham – the film and the stage musical) is one of the panel guests at the 2nd annual ‘Fans of music from the movies’ event. Doors open at 11.30am on Saturday 9th September with the event running from 12-5pm. Information and tickets.

Guy Farley, Frank Ilfman and Christopher Young are panel guests too.

The venue is Angel Studios, Islington [311 – 312 Upper Street, Islington London N1 2TU – I recommend the free CityMapper app [Apple | Android] / web-app for getting anywhere in London].

David has two concerts coming up this month in Dublin – the first, on Friday 19th May, is a selection of music from his career and the second, Saturday 20th May, is a screening of Independence Day with the orchestra playing the full score live. All the dialogue, sound and other special effects are as they were in the film, they just quieten the music and the orchestra takes over.

His concerts are always rather lovely events. Two years ago I was at his Dublin 2015 concert and it was a wonderful and joyful occasion – I collected loads of appreciative tweets and Instagram posts about it here. Last year I attended #ID4Live’s premiere last year at the Royal Albert Hall and it was every bit as immense and epic as you might imagine. I realise someone who’s created a fan site specifically to celebrate David Arnold’s concerts might be a bit biased but honestly they’re just brilliant 🙂

Both concerts take place at the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre and Nicholas Dodd will be conducting the RTÉ Concert Orchestra.

If you’re travelling from the UK and fancy doing the journey by rail-and-sail then this post might be of use, though I suspect the prices will have gone up a bit!
