Last week David Arnold chose, and spoke about, some of his favourite pieces of music when he appeared on Ken Bruce’s Radio 2 programme (in the ‘Tracks of My Years’ section). ‘Tracks of my years’ – @DavidGArnold guests on @RealKenBruce’s BBC R2 show this week

Screen shot of Ken Bruce's podcast on BBC Radio 2This week David Arnold is Ken Bruce’s guest and will be sharing some of his favourite pieces of music over the next few days. Ken’s show runs from 9.30am to noon.

“English film composer David Arnold, known for scoring James Bond films and ‘Sherlock’ TV series chooses his Tracks of My Years.”

The segment in today’s podcast (23 March) begins a little after 2hr 9min, with David’s first two choices of music and an interview in the middle.

He’ll be on the show with some more musical picks tomorrow and other days this week – see the schedule below for more information. I suspect that his choices will eventually make their way onto this playlist page too, possibly once the week is over.

Tracks of my years: David Arnold

  • 23 March
  • 24 March
  • 25 March – didn’t find a link so assuming it’s a four day feature (but will keep checking just in case I missed it!)
  • 26 March
  • 27 March

David Arnold - A Night at the Movies Manchester 14 April 2015David will also be performing his own music, with a great big orchestra, at the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester in a few weeks – if you’re nearby don’t miss this. I realise that as a fan I’m likely to be excited about his musical activities but an awful lot of people agree with me (have a look at the reviews of his London concert last year and the enthusiastic tweets about his Dublin concert in January this year). See? Exactly 🙂 Give us a D… Give us an A… etc *pom poms*

If you can’t get to Manchester there are some concerts in other English cities in April and June and see this post for an announcement about some musical soundtrack releases (hint: Sherlock on vinyl and Made in Dagenham original cast recording).

Mildly diverting visitor stats for this website :)

Since creating this fan site in mid December last year (it exists because David Arnold doesn’t appear to have a working website at the moment and I thought it was a good idea to keep information about his concerts in one place) the site has been visited almost 1,000 times by nearly 500 visitors. Well over two fifths of all visits happened in the fortnight before David’s orchestral concert of his film and television music (Stargate, Independence Day, James Bond, BBC’s Sherlock) in Dublin in January.

Most visitors have come from the UK and Ireland but the site’s had visitors from 22 countries in total. Most (a little over half) have been referred (“heard about / visited the site via”) Twitter but recently there’s been an increasing number of people visiting after finding out about the site independently, through search engines.

The most popular page is Concerts, which lists all concert information in one handy guide and of course the Home page and the front page of the blog.

And a little over 5 per cent of visits (or a tenth of visitors) follow a link to ticket bookings for the various concerts (obviously I can’t know if they buy tickets though!).

You can see all the posts and pages on this site on the sitemap and you can sign up for updates about concerts etc. This website’s on Twitter at @DGAunofficial and David is there himself as @DavidGArnold. He’s not involved with this site though.

David Arnold’s next concerts in 2015

Two music announcements: cast recordings from #MadeinDagenham / #Sherlock OST (on vinyl) & you can hear the music live

It’s a biggie so here’s a table of contents

1. Made in Dagenham announce cast recording
2. Silva Screen records announce a vinyl pressing of a selection of Sherlock music from Series 1-3
3. David Arnold is performing his music on tour and you can hear the music from Sherlock with a massive orchestra which is AMAZING.

1. Made in Dagenham announce a cast recording

Made in Dagenham announces cast recording

Made in Dagenham the musical (catch it before 11 April at the Adelphi theatre on the Strand in London) has announced that there will be an original cast recording of the music, written by David Arnold (lyrics by Richard Thomas) 🙂

2. Silva screen – Sherlock vinyl release

Silva Screen records have announced that they will be releasing, on vinyl, a selection from all of the music so far (series 1-3, by David Arnold and Michael Price) from the BBC series #Sherlock. Only 1,000 copies will be pressed and it will cost £16.99, the release date is intended to coincide with the Sherlocked Convention in London at the end of April. Read more about the announcement at Sherlockology.

They have also confirmed that it will be available to those outside the UK!

3. Hear the music live – David Arnold on tour

David Arnold is on tour! He’s performing his film and television music, with a large orchestra, in several concert halls in April (in Manchester) and in June (London, Birmingham and Nottingham).

He’ll be performing a beautiful song from Made in Dagenham the musical (accompanying himself on piano) and the full orchestra will be performing the Sherlock Suite. I highly recommend going along to one of these concerts if you can – apart from the fact that the music is fab the whole evening’s very good fun too.

David Arnold’s next concert
will be on Tuesday 14 April at Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall which has just been picked as one of the ten best concert halls in the world by Trevor Cox (Professor of Acoustic Engineering at Salford University who wrote the book Sonic Wonderland) – he’s previously reported testing the Halls’s acoustics on his blog.

You can read the woohoo-ing tweets sent by the audience from David’s concert in Dublin earlier this year (see a couple of examples right at the end of this post). And enjoy the enthusiastic reviews from his debut concert at the Royal Festival Hall in London last year.

“The star character of this memorable event however was not 007, but undoubtedly Sherlock. It is rare for any contemporary television series to have such an imaginative and well written score, which when performed last night as an orchestral suite, captivated and invigorated the entire auditorium.”
Review: David Arnold at the Royal Festival Hallbeige

Music from Sherlock is also featuring at a separate concert in Prague on 10 June 2015 and is a popular addition to other film music concerts.

BBC Radio 2 today (Sat) 10am-1pm: Graham Norton w David Arnold, Aidan Turner and Kelly Clarkson

Screen Shot 2015-03-07 at 23.54.52David Arnold is one of the guests on Graham Norton’s BBC Radio 2 show on Saturday morning (7 March 2015) from 10am until 1pm. Possibly he’ll mention the fact that he’s doing an amazing orchestral concert tour of his music from the last 20 years (recently hugely enjoyed by the people of Dublin, and last year enthusiastically received at London’s Royal Festival Hall) and perhaps he might mention the fantastic and funny Made in Dagenham musical, for which he wrote the music and which is showing at the Adelphi in London until 11 April 2015.

“With guests, James Bond composer David Arnold, the star of Poldark, actor Aidan Turner, and singer Kelly Clarkson. Plus more Grill Grahams with Maria McErlane.”

.@theCBSO premiered the #Sherlock Suite in July 2013, hear them perform it again in June 2015

(Paddy Considine was the other guest, not Jeremy Irons who appeared at another concert)

and here’s a swearier tweet expressing a similar sentiment 🙂

The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra premiered the Sherlock Suite, on 8 July 2013 at the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester, as one of Mark Kermode’s four 50th birthday celebration concerts. They’ll be playing it again at two concerts in June 2015, in Birmingham and Nottingham, as part of David Arnold’s series of ‘Live in concert’ events (at which he’ll be performing).

And they’re playing it on Friday 6 March at Birmingham Symphony Hall too, part of Friday Night Classics: 21st Century Blockbusters.

There’ll be plenty of James Bond music at David’s concerts too and Londoners might also want to take advantage of the fact that the Prince Charles Cinema in Leicester Square is holding a Bond retrospective and showing all 007 films every Sunday. In a nice bit of programming confluence the Thursday 18 June concert at the Barbican is sandwiched between Casino Royale on Sunday 14 June and Quantum of Solace on Sunday 21 June.

In case you missed it, here’s Saturday’s post with David conducting A Night at the Opera from Quantum of Solace.
